Review & notes

I haven’t yet read the whole book. I bought this in Lisbon, as a gift for my mum. Because she has other books to read, including my copy of “O Alquimista”, I took this one to read myself. To my big surprise, I noticed that the book is written in European Portuguese – likely, it was localised in Lisbon. Because I’m a native speaker of Polish, which did not have colonies and is used only here in Poland, such concepts such as to why would anyone localise this are foreign to me. It does not hurt, however, to read in European Portuguese for a change, a beautiful variety.

The book is considerably more difficult for me than Alquimista. It is linguistically a normal challenge for a B2 reader, but the nature of chaotic thoughts of Pilar and her emotional attitude, as well as a not-so-obvious introduction of witches, required me to read it alongside an English translation to fully comprehend what is happening. That said, the book strikes me as interesting; a different perspective.

Às vezes, a felicidade é uma bênção - mas geralmente é uma conquista.

"Sometimes, happiness is a blessing - but generally it's a conquest."
It means, in my opinion, that we should with energy act, we should not be passive, and this way we can get what makes us happy.
