2018 Tian Shan travel: Part 8

2018 Tian Shan

August-September 2018 travel to Kazakhstan reviewed in 2021

Commentary from 2021

When you come from a country that is not exactly the world’s industrial superpower, there is a bit of joy when you see in a shop abroad a product from your place, especially if the country is far away and exotic. But why of all things Kazakhstan sells Polish maple syrup? We in Poland have nothing in common with maple syrup. It’s not even well known in Poland, and while I like it, what we have in Poland is subpar quality imports from France or Germany. I did not try the one on the photo, I had better things to do, but it did made me wonder how iconic example of globalisation this is.

Obviously, markets don’t give a flying flamingo about globalisation, correctness of countries, they’re supposed to satisfy customer demand in any way allowed and profitable. I do understand that. But still… I’d rather see our pierogi there than our maple syrup of all things.

Forget about that Spongebob. There is literal Polish maple syrup in stores in Kazakhstan. Of all things from Poland that you could be selling in another country.

If that is not globalisation, I have no idea what is.
