2018 Tian Shan
August-September 2018 travel to Kazakhstan reviewed in 2021
Commentary from 2021
Kok Tobe – a hill in the city of Almaty, at 1100 m altitude, accessible from a car or cable car. Due to its accessibility and nice views to the city, I visited it several times at least, during the day and the night. It will be in a few of my posts, both in the one below posted on 24.08.2018, and on later ones. To me it was fun because I could take my camera and my telescope there and watch the city and its specific places, such as the ski jumping platform.

Trip to Kok Tobe
Kók Tóbe (Cyrillic: Көк Төбе) is a smaller mountain located within Almaty city. There is a cable car going up there. There is a good view over the city from it. So, I went there today.
Unfortunately, cable car war broken! So, we had to wait for replacement buses.
Next building’s windows distorted the bus, it wasn’t that wavy… although it felt like it was when it was going uphill.
They had a great view indeed. I took my Nikon binoculars and stood right next to paid urban binoculars, offering my own to people so that they don’t have to pay. Looks like the kids liked it!
Kok Tobe also has an observation wheel, a zoo (no tickets – really strange, but pleasant!) and restaurants. In the middle of it, you would see a grand tower. What was it for? I wasn’t able to get inside. A pity!
